Dogs play an important role in people’s daily lives; they serve as great companions for those who are looking for company. They can provide much-needed help for disabled members of society. They can also be great partners for those who enforce the law. That said, there are times wherein dogs can be a beacon of hope for those who are in despair.
Take, for example, the fire incident that took place at the Mendocino Complex. Firefighters of the Draper City Fire Department, USA, were called to put out a big fire. One of the firefighters, Patrick Cullen, was tasked to ensure that the pump on the fire engine was working well.
Patrick heard a noise coming from the darkness afar. He scrambled to his feet and prepared for the worse such, as a Mountain Lion attack. Instead, what appeared out of the dark was a friendly German Shepherd.
He noticed that the dog looks pretty exhausted and weak. Seeing this, he gave the poor dog a bowl of water, and the dog quickly gulps down all of it. Afterward, it went underneath the engine where it slept for hours.
The firefighters returned to see the large dog sleeping under the fire engine after they have ended the fire. Patrick told them how things ended up this way, and his teammates decided to give the dog the “Mendo” nickname. Patrick eventually took the German Shepherd to a nearby animal shelter and left his number to them. He told them that if no one comes forward to adopt the dog, then he will be the one to do so.
Fated, the shelter called Patrick and told him that no one came forward to adopt Mendo. With this, Patrick went to the shelter right away to take the dog home, who immediately recognized him. For Patrick, as well as his team members, Mendo’s arrival was a sign of hope for them in an otherwise painful experience as one of their members lost their lives in the previous fire incident.
